The Exploration Place closed its physical building in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The building remains closed as we perform an extensive renovation to our galleries and a programming shift. Not having use of our facility has meant we have had to find creative solutions to bring our programming to youth in Prince George and maintain a connection with our community. One way we will accomplish this is to create Exploration Kits, stand-alone kits containing materials for scientific exploration in schools, daycares, and community groups. We loan out these kits for self-led programming, with the option for virtual guided programming with our Community Programming team. These kits provide curriculum-linked, informal, STEAM-based learning at no cost, reaching those who would otherwise be unable to participate. We will deliver these kits to local schools and, if possible, will send them out to rural, remote, and Indigenous communities.
By converting existing programs to make them easy, accessible, and "pandemic-friendly," we simplify access to learning at a time when scientific and cultural literacy is vitally important and at a time when teachers are burned out by "pandemic teaching." By bringing our educational kits to schools and the community, removing cost-prohibitive factors, and making it as easy and uncomplicated to access as possible, we can offer opportunities to develop an appreciation for life-long learning even when our building is closed.
Because of the work of a few, many Prince George charities have benefited by the creation of the Prince George Community Foundation. More than 25 years ago the Foundation was just a dream. Today it has granted back over $4.89 million and we're just getting started. We are proud to release this video in honor of those who came before us and worked so tirelessly to create a Foundation that will benefit all Prince George residents. Please enjoy.
